The Hirschmann HC3901 safe load indicator system is intended to aid the crane operation by monitoring the load and warning of an approach to an overload and other conditions. It is designed for all medium size telescopic and lattice boom mobile cranes.  The graphical LCD display is easy to read with all information and warnings clearly displayed on the monitor. It is fitted with an external data-logger with readout and data setup via USB flash disk or Ethernet cable. The data-logger is build to the highest quality with exterior made with cast aluminium and protection level of IP66. The main  load indicator system includes operator consoles, force sensor/force transducers and angle sensor/cable reel.

With an increase in crane accident at the start of the year involving a string of seven crane-related incidents, MOM (Ministry of Manpower) have decided to make it mandatory for all mobile crane to be equipped with data logger device in order to improve crane and lifting practice. The mandatory equipping mobile crane with data logger will be implemented in two phrase,

• From 1 August 2015, all new mobile cranes registered with MOM will have to be equipped with data loggers; and

• Existing registered mobile cranes, including those registered before 1 August 2015, have to be retrofitted with data loggers by 1 August 2018.

In order to encourage crane owner to retrofit their existing mobile crane with data logger system, Workplace Safety and Health Council will launch a new co-funding to help companies defray cost of installation of data logger. Data logger funding for crane will cover 50% of the cost of installation or up to $5000 per mobile crane.

In order to be eligible for co funding, mobile crane will have to fulfill conditions set by MOM. Funding of data logger will start from August 2015 and on a first-come-first served basis and will cease on 31 July 2018 or when funds have been fully disbursed. However this also generates potential risks. Hirschmann’s HC2902 excavator safe load indicator (SLI) is an ideal solution for protecting people and machine. The system consists of a compact SLI with central.unit and 4.3 inch console integrated, two high accuracy electronic angle sensors and two pressure sensors, both with Can-Bus protocol communications to guarantee the system accuracy within ±5%. The Hirschmann HC2902 SLI system is designed and manufactured to conform to GB-T13331-2005 and ISO 10567:1992

Main System Components

Operator Console

The SLI display shows the height, radius, angle, maximum load, actual load and percentage loading. It gives out yellow pre-warning light and intermittent audio alarm when the load moment exceeds 90% of the rated moment and red warning light and continuous audio alarm when the load moment reaches 100%

Angle sensors

The SLI system consist of 2 angle sensor, the boom and arm angle sensor. The angle sensors helps to determine the height and radius of the excavator. Under excavation mode, the SLI system can also indicate excavation depth, which gives the operator effective guidance so as to avoid excavating over the depth limit. The SLI system can also define the permissible radius and height of the movement, thus protecting people and machine while maintaining efficiency.

Pressure Sensors

The SLI system consist of 2 pressure sensor to determine the actual load of the lifted load. The pressure sensor can measure up to a range of 400 bar with high accuracy, thus ensuring that the actual load display on the operator console will be accurate.

The graphical LCD display is easy to calibrate, indicate all key and clearly displays the information and warnings needed for the driver to operate the crane within the parameters of the duty chart. For a fully featured indicator with a range of expansion options the Rezonans OGM240 series is the ideal choice. It has an internal built data-logger with readout and data setup via USB flash disk. The main system includes operator consoles, control module, running line-tensionmeter/force transducers and angle sensors.

Main System Components

Operator Console 

Operating console for external or free-standing installation with back-lit monochrome display. Six buttons keyboard for menu navigation and functions selection. On customer’s demand the rated capacity limiter system might be equipped with graphical multi-colour TFT-display display for representation of data and diagnostic message. It contains a set of standard wire (CAN, LIN, USB), as well as inputs for two video cameras.

Control Module

Controllers was designed for communicating of resistive and inductive loads and converting analog and discrete inputs. It is used in electronic control and rated capacity limiter systems.

Running Line-Tensionmeter/Tension Force Transducer

The Running Line-Tensionmeter/Tension Force Transducer provides measurement of stretching force until 10000 kgf. Used for measurement of force in electronic control systems for construction machinery and rated capacity limiter systems on the lifting machines.

Angle Sensor

Angle sensors measures the angles of slope, elevation or inclination of an item with respect to gravity. The sensors are fully electronic and contains no mechanical moving parts.

DAT instruments JET 4000 AME is suitable for installation on Jet grouting technique – injection of cement grout at high pressure, Bi-fluid jet grouting technique – injection of air and cement, and Tri-fluid injection – injection simultaneously air, water and cement. Kobelco Kcross (Kobelco Crane Remote Observation Satellite System) is the original manufacturer fitted Data-Logger to be in-cooperated into its Kobelco cranes. With Singapore Ministry of Manpower (MOM) and Land Transport Authority (LTA) currently  holding a pilot trial on fitting construction cranes with data-logger to record critical operational data of cranes and show how many times operators overload their crane, it will be soon before such devices will be made compulsory as a safety requirement.
